What is Mechanical Engineering?
Mechanical Engineering is one of the major divisions within the profession and its principles are involved in the design, development and construction of nearly all of the physical devices and systems which technology has produced. Mechanical engineers are also concerned with the operations of all kinds of machinery, and the production of power. They must conceive research, design, develop, test, manufacture and sell equipment for these purposes.
Works by Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical engineers design power-producing machines, such as electric generators, internal combustion engines, and steam and gas turbines, as well as power-using machines, such as refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. Mechanical engineers design other machines inside buildings, such as elevators and escalators.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering is actively associated in grooming the engineering graduates in Mechanical Engineering
by nurturing them with inputs from various basic and specialized subjects involving production, industrial, thermal and design
engineering. A wide selection of projects, seminars and training facilities besides technical visits to industrial enterprises
generates enormous potential and confidence among the students enabling them to independently handle the life size problems in
their engineering careers. Current subjects like Production Engineering/Operation Management, CAD/CAM, Ergonomics, Robotics,
Mechatronics etc. are highlights of the curriculum, besides ongoing advancements and computational product design and development
to accept the face global competition.
Mechanical is an engineering discipline that involves the application of principles of physics for analysis, design,
manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems.
It requires a solid understanding of core concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and energy.
Mechanical engineers use the core principles as well as other knowledge in the field to design and analyze motor vehicles,
aircraft, heating and cooling systems, watercraft, manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, robotics, medical
devices and more.
• Mechatronics,is an interdisciplinary branch of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and software
engineering that is concerned with integrating electrical and mechanical engineering to create hybrid systems.
• Robotics,is the application of mechatronics to create robots, which are often used in industry to perform
tasks that are dangerous, unpleasant, or repetitive.
• Structural analysis,is the branch of mechanical engineering (and also civil engineering) devoted to examining
why and how objects fail. Structural failures occur in two general modes: static failure, and fatigue failure.
• Thermodynamics,is an applied science used in several branches of engineering, including mechanical and chemical engineering.
At its simplest, thermodynamics is the study of energy, its use and transformation through system.
• Drafting or technical drawing,is the means by which mechanical engineers create instructions for manufacturing parts.
• Thermal Engineering,Application in Power plant, Process industries.
• Aerodynamics, finds application in Aerospace Industries.
Mechanical engineers are required in automobile, chemical, electronics, steel plants, oil exploration and refining,
Several government departments including Posts and Telegraphs, Defense, PWD, and CPWD employ mechanical engineers.
Aeronautical, agricultural, automobile, chemical, and power plants, as well as the railways, need mechanical engineers to
design and maintain their machinery.
There is a huge requirement for mechanical engineers in steel, cement; constructions, infrastructure (maintenance) and process
industries, Engineering Procurement Construction and contractor firms (EPC), Power plants, Nuclear power plants, manufacturing
and operations all offer bright possibilities & opportunities.
